15 June 2002, 300th anniversary of Rumphius’ death Naturalis
Veldkamp, J.F..
On 15 June 2002, it will be the 300th anniversary of the death of the founder of Malesian botany, zoology, and geology, Georg Everhard Rumpf, better known as Rumphius (probably late 1627-1702). It seemed suitable to present a brief commemoration here. This being a botanical bulletin, I will mainly deal with the plants. Many articles and books even have been written about this remarkable man and the results of his exploits in the Moluccas, which have given him an everlasting place of honour in the history of natural science. He is the undisputed patriarch of Malesian botany, zoology, and geology. None has had such a wide and integrated knowledge of these sciences, and was also well-versed in pharmaceutical, architectural, juridical (local and Western),...

1-Methylcyclopropene delays tomato fruit ripening Horticultura Brasileira
Moretti,Celso Luiz; Araújo,Alessandra L.; Marouelli,Waldir Aparecido; Silva,Washington Luiz C..
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) fruits, cv. Santa Clara, were harvested at the breaker stage from commercial fields in Brazlândia, Brazil, to investigate the ability of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to retard tomato fruit ripening. Fruit without external blemishes were graded for size (diameter = 80±5 mm) and mass (m = 130±10 g), placed inside hermetically sealed boxes, and 1-MCP was applied for 12 hours (T = 22±1°C; RH = 80-85%) at four different concentrations: 0 (control), 250, 500 and 1000 mL.L-1. Fruits were held at ambient conditions (T = 23±2°C; RH 80-85%) for 2 days and then stored inside a cold room (T = 20±1°C; RH = 85-95%). Every 3 days, during a 15-day period, fruits were analyzed for firmness, total soluble solids, titratable acidity,...

2001 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SOUTHEASTERN MINNESOTA FARM BUSINESS MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION AgEcon
Olson, Kent D.; Westman, Lorin L.; Nordquist, Dale W..
The average net farm income was $60,978 for the 59 farms included in the 2001 annual report of the Southeastern Minnesota Farm Business Management Association. This was a decrease of 21% from 2000 (Figure 1). Even though gross cash farm income increased more than cash expenses, the decrease in net farm income is due in large part to a large decrease in the inventory value of crops and feed. As in previous years, the income levels experienced by individual farms vary greatly from the overall average. When the net farm incomes for the 59 farms in the report were ranked from lowest to highest, the resulting graph shows how much the incomes do vary (Figure 2). Several farms experienced negative incomes, and several experienced very high incomes. Most...

2001 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SOUTHWESTERN MINNESOTA FARM BUSINESS MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION AgEcon
Anderson, Robert D.; Weness, Erlin J.; Olson, Kent D.; Christensen, James L.; Fales, Perry A.; Nordquist, Dale W..
Average net farm income was $36,614 in 2001 for the 207 farms included in this annual report of the Southwestern Minnesota Farm Business Management Association. This is a sharp drop (55%) from the average net farm income of $81,750 in 2000 (Figure 1). As in previous years, the actual profit levels experienced by individual farms vary greatly from the overall average profit. When the net farm incomes for the 207 farms in the report are ranked from lowest to highest, the resulting graph shows how much the incomes do vary (Figure 2). Twenty-four percent of the farms experienced negative net farm income in 2001; 8% had incomes over $100,000. Most of the net farm incomes ranged from below 0 to about $150,000. The median or middle income was $29,040....

2002 ANNUAL AGRICULTURAL OUTLOOK AgEcon
Hilker, James H.; Alderman, Nicole.
The global economy is also faltering. Global economic growth in 2001 was the slowest of any year since 1993, and only a modest rebound is forecast for 2002. The combination of sluggish world growth and a strong dollar should continue to constrain farm exports in 2002.Three concerns are important as we look ahead business earnings, productivity, and global growth.

2002 NORTH DAKOTA AGRICULTURAL OUTLOOK: REPRESENTATIVE FARMS, 2002-2011 AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D.; Swenson, Andrew L..
Net farm income for most representative farms in 2011 will be lower than in 2002. Low profit farms, which consist of 25% of the farms in the study, may not have financial resiliency to survive. The new farm bill will provide higher net farm income than a continuation of the FAIR Act. Cropland prices and cash rental rates are projected to increase slightly in all regions. Debt-to-asset ratios for most farms will increase slightly throughout the forecast period. Debt-to-asset ratios for the low-profit and small-size farms are higher than those for large and high-profit farms.

2002 OUTLOOK OF THE U.S. AND WORLD SUGAR MARKETS, 2001-2011 AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world sugar markets for 2001-2011 by using the Global Sugar Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, population growth, weather conditions, and technological changes. Both the U.S. and world sugar economies are predicted to improve over the next 10 years after the current over supply is reduced. World demand for sugar is expected to grow faster than world supply, resulting in gradually increasing Caribbean sugar prices from 7.81 cents/lb in 2001 to 12.05 cents/lb in 2011. The U.S. wholesale price of sugar is projected to increase from 21.7 cents/lb in 2001 to 25.2 cents/lb in 2011, if the United States maintains its sugar programs. World...

2002 OUTLOOK OF THE U.S. AND WORLD WHEAT INDUSTRIES, 2001-2011 AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world wheat markets for the 2002-2012 period by using the Global Wheat Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change. Both the U.S. and world wheat economies are predicted to improve for the next ten years. World demands for both common and durum wheat are expected to grow faster than world production of the two wheat classes, resulting in gradual increases in prices of the wheat varieties, which are predicted to increase 15.3% for durum wheat and 17.3% for common wheat for the 2002-2012 period. World trade volumes of both classes of wheat are expected to expand, but trade volume of durum...
